November 2012: the Newquay Team attended the 1st Newquay Scouts group. There were about 47 scouts wanting to know what we do and how we operate.
Very few of the group had been with anyone that had made a 999 call so with the assistance of Falmouth Coastguard a simulated call was made where the operator at Falmouth asked all the questions they would in a normal 999 call. A young scout was picked out to make the call and provide the necessary information that they would have to give to the operator.
We then simulated a cliff recovery so they could see a few of the team working with the equipment that we have and what the cliff technicians need to take with them.
On a personal note we would like to thank Falmouth Coastguard for making this event possible and to ask people never to make a false call as there maybe someone else that really does need our help. If you genuinely think that someone is in trouble or you need help yourself in the sea or on the coast then please Dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
Phil and a young scout go through the process of dialling a 999 call and giving the information the emergency services will need
Darren shows the scouts how to tie a figure of eight knot on a bight
The scouts lower the cliffman (Will) down to the casualty (Katherine) via signals from Phil.
The cliffman then makes sure that the casualty is rigged up correctly before the scouts haul them back
If you would like the Newquay Coastguard team to attend your school or group to give a talk / demonstration then please contact Katherine MacCreadie and she will get in touch with you.
